I just added Ed Wallis and his partner Tim Edwards’ blog to my list of links (on the right side of your screen). Ed is a trial lawyer in Tennessee and an active member of the American Association for Justice (AAJ).
Ed and Tim have a lot of good information on their blog and website. I took special notice of their information about cribs and recent recalls:
In the wake of a recall affecting nearly 1.6 million cribs, federal regulators plan to institute new standards governing crib durability and hardware problems. A spokeswoman for the Consumer Products Safety Commission said that while voluntary standards have decreased the number of crib injuries and deaths, they have not fully addressed comprehensive durability standards. Durability and hardware issues have been at the root of five recent crib recalls, according to the Washington Post. Read more HERE.
Take a moment to check out Ed and Tim’s site. It’s worth the click.

I hope everyone enjoys their Thanksgiving.
I’m thankful for all I have. My family, friends and even my co-workers. This Thanksgiving I encourage everyone to thank the men and women in the armed forces. I’m thankful we live in the United States.

Bisphenol A (BPA) More Prevelant Than You Think November 16, 2008

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s lead story today talks about Bisphenol A (BPA). I bet most people without kids aren’t aware of the controversy over BPA. Long story short, there is a concern over BPA’s effect on fetal and infant brain development and behavior.
In April, 2008 Canada stated it intended to ban the sale, import and advertisement of baby bottles containing BPA. Since then there has been scores of stories and reports on the dangers of BPA and the prevalence of BPA.
There are two sides to every story. Here is the Food and Drug Administration’s official statement:
FDA is not recommending that anyone discontinue using products that contain BPA while we continue our risk assessment process. However, concerned consumers should know that several alternatives to polycarbonate baby bottles exist, including glass baby bottles
Today’s story is news because it highlights some of the common household items that contain BPA. And the report that simply microwaving or dishwashing items with BPA releases the chemical.
The story reports:
Products marketed for infants or billed as “microwave safe” release toxic doses of the chemical bisphenol A when heated, an analysis by the Journal Sentinel has found.
Read the story and check out the pdfs attached. But, like always, be sure to read it carefully. The pdf entitled “How to avoid bisphenol A” talks about the relative safety of plastics marked with 1 PETE, 2 HDPE, 4 LDPE, and 5 PP describing them as “safer.”
Yet, the story on JSOnline.com states:
Food companies advise parents worried about BPA to avoid microwaving food in plastic containers, especially those with the recycling No. 7 stamped on the bottom.
But the Journal Sentinel’s testing found BPA leaching from containers with different recycling numbers, including Nos. 1, 2 and 5.
Check out your kitchen cupboards. We bought glass bottles for our little one. Why take the risk?
UPDATE: Check out this US News Article from September about how to avoid BPA.

One Week From Today October 28, 2008

The Journal Sentinel reported about a law that dates back to 1945. All voters are:
entitled to be absent from work while the polls are open for a period not to exceed three successive hours
Voters don’t get paid for the time off work. Also:
the law prohibits employers from penalizing workers in any way for requesting time off to vote
If you want to take advantage of the law I’d suggest you make arrangements with your employer sooner rather than later.

The PKS blog has a good post from September 24, 2008 about a recent report published by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services of the worst Nursing Homes in America. Four of them are found in Wisconsin.
A large part of our practice is Nursing Home Abuse. I have a lot of family in Marinette, Wisconsin and have some knowledge of the Luther Home there. If you have any questions about nursing home abuse feel free to contact me.

I’m not sure what Avvo is all about. But, I’m thankful for it nonetheless. It seems that I’m “superb” according to their rating system. Also, thanks to Attorney Sean Sweeney for the endorsement.
Thanks Avvo! Thanks Sean! You may know more about me than I do! Keep up the good work.
