Ever wonder why a whole bunch of kind-of-related web pages will show up when you search on google or yahoo. For example, when you type “Wisconsin Dog Bite Attorney” attorneys from Illinois, Michigan and California pop up in your results. (Quick hint: Make sure you read the entire web page and know where your attorney is licensed. Or, when you call ask if they have the ability to file a lawsuit in your state.)
I think the reason is embedded keywords. You can’t see them unless you look at the “source” of the web page. I’ve cut and pasted from a few websites that came up when I searched for “Wisconsin Dog Bite Attorney”.
I thought the content was interesting:
meta name=”keywords” content=”milwaukee, wisconsin, wi, kenosha, racine, chicago, il, injury, accident, lawyer, attorney, lawsuit, damage, scarring, negligence, auto, car, motor vehicle, premises liability, livestock, pet, dog, pit bull, doberman, cow, cattle, animal, bite, bitten, attack, property, attorny, atorney, attornies, lawer, laywer, medical malpractice, birth injuries, nursing home negligence, personal injury, car accident, auto accidents, products liability, wrongful death, animal attacks, premises liability, transportation accidents, misdiagnosis, doctor error, medical mistakes, construction liability, commercial litigation, cerebral palsy, palsy, brain damage, cancer misdiagnosis, hospital negligence, nursing home abuse, slip and fall, tractor trailer collisions, boating accident, car crash, dog bites, aviation accident, wreck, lawyers, attorneys, legal, law, firm, lawfirm, practice, Illinois, Wisconsin, IL, WI, Chicago, Aurora, Rockford,Naperville,Joliet,Springfield,Peoria,Waukegan,Elgin,Schaumburg,Wheaton,Urbana,Rock Island,Moline,Lake Forest,Zion,Antioch,Gurnee,Kenosha,Racine,Lake Geneva,Pleasant Prairie,Twin Lakes,Aturtevant,Burlington,Beloit,Janesville,Monroe,Kenosha County,Racine County,Walworth County,Rock County,Green County
Notice there are lots of mispelled words just in case you and me are in a hurry and don’t know exactly how a city or “attorney” is spelled. Also, “cow” and “cattle” are embedded in a “dog bite” search. Kind of weird, huh?

A lot of personal injury law is investigating the facts of a collision. We’ve come across this useful website that identifies drunk drivers in the Sheboygan, Wisconsin area.
It’s presented by the Sheboygan Press.

This is more of a “For Your Information” post.
I travel almost everwhere in Wisconsin for my clients. If you check out Groth’s website you’ll see that we’ve handled cases in almost every county in Wisconsin. So, if a client is located in Marinette will they have to drive to Milwaukee to meet with me? NO. If necessary I’ll be on the road to meet in Marinette.
In most situations the case can be handled over the phone. For example, I’m handling cases for a number of people in Chicago and a few in Florida. I don’t fly to Florida or take the train to Chicago to meet with them. The phone and email work just fine.
Don’t worry about where in Wisconsin you happen to live or happen to have been injured. If it is important to meet at the scene of the incident I’ll be there.

It must be summer. I’ve been talking with a lot of new clients injured by dogs. For everyone’s information below I’ve linked to and posted Wisconsin’s Dog Bite Law (Sec. 174 Wis. Stats.)
When a dog causes injury to a person for the first time (“without notice”):
“the owner of a dog is liable for the full amount of damages caused by the dog injuring or causing injury to a person, domestic animal or property.”
When a dog owner knows that a dog has caused injury in the past and the dog causes injury again (“after notice”):
“the owner of a dog is liable for 2 times the full amount of damages caused by the dog injuring or causing injury to a person, domestic animal or property if the owner was notified or knew that the dog previously injured or caused injury to a person, domestic animal or property.”

I read an article in the Oshkosh Northwestern recently that mentioned a few federal studies. One stated that Wisconsin led the nation in the number of adult residents who reported driving while under the influence. This was a federal study from April of this year. Old news but an important reminder that Wisconsin needs to change it drunk driving laws.
I didn’t recall hearing about a 2006 study by the FBI that found Wisconsin had the sixth highest arrest rate for drunk drivers. Also, Wisconsin had the fourth highest arrest rate for liquor law violations.
I’ve handled cases for many victims of drunk driving. Just the other day I spoke with a client that was struck by a drunk driver whose blood alcohol contect was .314 (I think that is pretty close to alcohol poisoning and death). That drunk driver has at least one other drunk driving arrest.
If you are the victim of drunk driving I’d like to help. At the very least I’d appreciate it if you’d contact your legislator and then email me. I’d like to keep track of which legislators have been contacted by victims in their district. The next time an important anti-drunk driving vote reaches Madison it’s important that the legislature is kept accountable!

“There is no greater poster child for insurance industry greed than Allstate.” The American Association for Justice recently published a report of the ten worst insurance companies. Allstate won the prize!
Other “honorable mentions” of auto/home insurance companies that write policies in Wisconsin are: AIG (3), State Farm (4), Farmers (7), Liberty Mutual (10).
Is there any wonder why victims of auto accidents, dog bites, motorcycle accidents and the like hire personal injury attorneys when Allstate’s insured is at fault?

Where does a bond go? When someone charged with criminal activity posts bond what happens to the money?
According to Section 969.13(5) of the Wisconsin Statutes when a defendant posts a bond that amount of money shall go first to the victim of the crime. For example, when a drunk driver injures someone and is charged with a crime the money he/she posts as bond must be saved by the court to pay to the victim as a form of restitution. Sounds like a good use of the money to me.
If you are the victim of a crime be sure to ask the victim witness advocate working on your case to keep you informed about the status of the bond.

In personal injury law once a lawsuit is filed time seems to slow to a crawl. In Wisconsin, defendants have 45 days to answer, judges can often take as long as they want to call a hearing to set the schedule of the case. Once the scheduling hearing comes along the deadlines set may be a year away.
There is little that a plaintiff can control concerning a lawsuit’s timetable. So, the things that a plaintiff’s attorney can control must be in the plaintiff’s best interest, i.e. move the case along.
One quick, and relatively easy, way to speed up the process is to file the plaintiff’s witness list with the Summons and Complaint. This can save up 60 or 90 days in the litigation process. Also, serve your interrogatories and requests for production of documents with the Summons and Complaint. The sooner the plaintiff has important information about the defendant the sooner depositions can be taken and the sooner the trial will come.

So who are you and why am I here? July 16, 2008

I just came from a meeting with a new client. She was referred to me by another attorney. Can you guess what question she asked me? I ‘m asked “who are you and why am I here” frequently. I’m honored to be the recipient of referrals from Doctors, Attorneys and others across Wisconsin. I’m oftentimes referred clients when another attorney doesn’t feel comfortable handling a certain litigation case, has a conflict or wants me as co-counsel to handle specific trial work.
This brings me to the client’s question. My response is simply; this is all I do. When you have a broken bone and need surgery you go to an orthopaedic Doctor not a rheumatologist. In the law when someone is involved in a motor vehicle collision, premises liability, product liability or other serious injury matter they come to a personal injury attorney. That is all I do. Because I concentrate on one portion of the law I am up to date and on top of the latest in the field.

Waukesha’s Most Dangerous Road? July 16, 2008

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that the intersection of Highway F and I94 in Waukesha County (Pewaukee to be exact) has been the site of 280 motor vehicle collisions since 2003. The County Safety Engineer states that simply adjusting the traffic signals so drivers can only turn with an arrow might help. They also note the high amount of traffic at that intersection.
I have some personal experience with this intersection. I worked at a law firm located near that stretch of road in 2002. Even then it was busy. Since then, a number of commercial buildings have popped up. At 5 o’clock it is a pain to drive anywhere near there.
What to do? Contact your county supervisor, aldermen, mayor and County Executive. Hopefully, the more complaints the sooner they will take action.
